Kenya has confirmed its first case of Ebola, a Kenyan citizen who had been residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the past seven years.

Health Minister Aden Duale said the patient, who had fallen ill a month earlier, was treated in several hospitals in DR Congo before arriving in Nairobi, where he died days later.

According to Duale, the traveler boarded a flight on Saturday, underwent routine public screening at Nairobi’s main airport, and was then transferred by a relative to a hospital in the city. Subsequent laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus.

DR Congo has recorded more than 4,000 deaths from Ebola this year, making it the second most deadly known outbreak of the disease.
