South African police announced the arrest of Kemi Seba, a French-born Beninese activist, who was recently apprehended while allegedly attempting to flee to Europe through Zimbabwe. Seba, whose real name is Stellio Gilles Robert Capo Chichi, is wanted in Benin on charges of inciting rebellion related to a coup plot that was foiled in December 2024.

The arrest occurred on Monday in a shopping center in Pretoria, where Seba was taken into custody alongside his 18-year-old son and a third individual who allegedly facilitated their intended illegal journey to Zimbabwe.

Kemi Seba, 45, has built a reputation for his opposition to French influence in Africa, backing military leaders in West Africa, and has faced accusations of spreading Russian propaganda. He has previously been convicted in France for inciting racial hatred.

The South African police reported that evidence suggests Seba is not only wanted in Benin but also may be a fugitive in France, facing charges related to crimes against the state. Investigations revealed the individual who assisted him had been paid approximately 250,000 South African rand ($15,000) to help facilitate their escape.

Seba and his son are currently in police custody following their appearance in court on Wednesday, where proceedings focus on his extradition to Benin to face these serious allegations. As of now, he has not publicly commented on the charges.

Born in France to Beninese parents, Seba is a prominent figure on social media with over 1.5 million followers and leads an NGO focused on African solidarity and sovereignty. His controversial views and actions have rendered him a polarizing figure in international discussions surrounding Africa’s political dynamics.

The situation escalated following Seba's public statements in support of the attempted coup in Benin, which led to an international warrant for his arrest. This incident highlights the ongoing political tensions in the region involving French and Russian influences.
