Israeli Air Strikes Hit Lebanese City of Tyre Amid Iranian Warning
In a flare‑up that could further destabilise an already tense region, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) carried out a series of air and artillery strikes on the coastal city of Tyre, Lebanon. Residents were ordered to evacuate the city’s Christian quarter for the first time in the conflict.
The Lebanese health ministry reports eight people killed and 32 injured in the strikes, with additional casualties in later shelling of the central al‑Raml area. The city’s eastern al‑Massaken al‑Shaabiya neighbourhood was hit repeatedly, forcing civilians to flee southward beyond the Zahrani River.
These attacks are part of a broader Israeli campaign against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, which escalated earlier in March when Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel following an Israeli strike on Iran’s supreme leader. Israel responded with widespread bombing across Lebanon, including a strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Iran has warned Israel not to continue attacks and has threatened retaliation. The Iranian Armed Forces halted their operations after launching 30 ballistic missile barrages toward Israeli targets, claiming to have delivered a painful response. Israel, meanwhile, threatened “overwhelming force” if another Iranian attack occurs.
The United States has urged Israel to limit its campaign against Hezbollah to facilitate negotiations with Iran on the war’s broader ramifications. Despite these diplomatic pressures, Israel is continuing its military operations in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah demands full Israeli withdrawal.
