At least five people have been killed in Russian strikes across Ukraine, after a massive overnight aerial bombardment targeted several regions across the country. A 61-year-old woman was killed when a drone hit an electric train in Kharkiv early on Tuesday, authorities reported, with additional fatalities noted in Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Poltava. These attacks were described as among the most severe in the past ten days, coinciding with warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about a potential 'massive strike'. The strikes also severed critical energy links for Moldova, as President Maia Sandu noted the situation remains precarious.

Sirens wailed throughout Ukraine on Monday night as the Russian arsenal unleashed a torrent of missiles and drones. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack included seven ballistic missiles, 23 cruise missiles, and 392 drones, of which air defense units intercepted 25 missiles and 365 drones. In response, Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for bolstered defense systems to safeguard lives from continuing Russian strikes.

The overnight offensive served to underscore the vulnerability of the regions other than Kyiv, as damage was reported across eleven different areas including the heavily affected city of Zaporizhzhia. Civilian damage was severe, with local testimonies detailing harrowing experiences amidst destruction. Ukrainian and US officials have recently engaged in talks regarding strategies to end the ongoing conflict, stressing the necessity for international focus on the situation in Ukraine even as attention shifts toward other global conflicts.
