MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Humberto is expected to generate dangerous surf for both Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast this week, while Tropical Storm Imelda is strengthening as it approaches the Bahamas, forecasters have reported.
Humberto remains a powerful Category 4 storm, approximately 400 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, moving northwest at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Bermuda as the storm is forecast to possibly intensify and accelerate towards the east-northeast before the week's end.
Conversely, Imelda formed on Sunday and is gradually strengthening, currently located about 130 miles northwest of the central Bahamas, with 45 mph maximum sustained winds. The weather service anticipates significant rainfall, which could lead to flash floods across the region, particularly in the Bahamas where up to a foot of rain is predicted.
Residents in low-lying areas are advised to take preventative measures against flooding. The Bahamas' Department of Meteorology has warned of continuous moderate to heavy rains across several islands, including Nassau and Long Island.
With impending severe weather, South Carolina’s Governor McMaster is preparing for potential high winds and flooding, while North Carolina’s Governor Stein has declared a state of emergency. Both states are on alert as the systems advance towards the U.S. East Coast.
