Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has been permitted to leave prison to undergo surgery on Christmas Day following approval from Brazil's Supreme Court, court documents reveal. Currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election, Bolsonaro will undergo hernia surgery on December 25. Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued the order for Bolsonaro's temporary transfer to a hospital for the procedure. The 70-year-old former president has faced numerous health challenges since being stabbed in the abdomen during the 2018 presidential campaign. His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, has shared a video urging supporters to 'keep praying for the president.' Bolsonaro, convicted of coup plotting last September, is serving his sentence in a federal police jail due to being deemed a flight risk. Protests against legislative efforts to shorten his prison term have emerged in major cities, coinciding with a bill passed by lawmakers which could significantly ease his sentence. Brazilian President Lula has promised to veto the bill if it reaches his desk, despite the possibility of an override by Congress. Recent U.S. actions, including lifting sanctions against Justice Moraes and comments from Donald Trump, have further intensified the political landscape surrounding Bolsonaro's legal challenges.
