In brief

Independent parliamentarian Helen Haines suffered serious injuries when a white Toyota Landcruiser struck her outside her Wangaratta office on Monday. Police suspect the incident was a deliberate attack after a 43‑year‑old man was detained at the scene and a knife was found in the vehicle. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the attack could not have been an accident and called for zero tolerance of violence against elected officials. Haines, a 65‑year‑old anti‑corruption champion, was flown to a Melbourne hospital by helicopter and remains in critical condition. Authorities are investigating the motive, and counter‑terror police have been involved, but they say there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Australian MP Helen Haines is critically ill after a vehicle struck her outside her Wangaratta office.

The 65‑year‑old Independent MP, known for her anti‑corruption work, was hit by a white Toyota Landcruiser at 15:35 on Monday afternoon. Police detained a 43‑year‑old man from nearby Tarrawingee at the scene; a knife was recovered from the car. Authorities are investigating whether the incident was an intentional act, but police say there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the event as a “deliberate” attack and condemned the violence, saying there is no place for such acts in a democracy. He added that the political climate has become more hostile, noting a rise in threats against politicians over the past year.

Haines was initially taken to a local hospital but was later airlifted to Melbourne for more intensive care. The aviation transfer was carried out by helicopter, and her condition remains critical.

Counter‑terror police have joined Victoria Police in the investigation, and officials confirmed the suspect was arrested after being subdued by bystanders. The investigation remains ongoing.
