A palliative care doctor in Germany has been charged with the murder of 15 of his patients, an alarming case that raises serious ethical questions about medical practice. The 40-year-old suspect, whose identity is protected by privacy laws, allegedly used lethal drugs to end the lives of 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024. Prosecutors in Berlin claim that as part of his efforts to cover up his actions, the doctor set fire to the homes of some of his victims. The method of killing involved administering an anaesthetic and a muscle relaxant, resulting in respiratory arrest and death within minutes, hinting at a calculated approach to his actions. Victims ranged in age from 25 to 94 years, and it is believed that the actual number of patients he may have harmed could be higher as investigations continue. Notably, on a single day in July 2024, he is accused of killing both a 75-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman just hours apart. After the latter incident, reports indicate that he attempted to set her house ablaze but unsuccessfully.Initially detained in August 2024 for the deaths of four patients, authorities later uncovered evidence leading to the current murder charges and ongoing investigations, including plans for further exhumations. The prosecution is seeking a lifelong professional ban and preventative detention for the accused, who remains in custody as the legal proceedings unfold.
