British music sensation Ed Sheeran encountered unexpected resistance from the Bengaluru police during an impromptu busking session on Sunday. Authorities intervened, claiming that the singer lacked the necessary permits to perform in the bustling Church Street area, a hub for shopping and entertainment. A viral video captured the moment when an officer unplugged Sheeran's microphone, halting the performance.

Despite the disruption, Sheeran took to Instagram to clarify that his team had indeed requested permission to busk, asserting that the spot was predetermined for the performance. He mentioned, "We had permission to busk, by the way. Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out before. It wasn't just us randomly turning up." Sheeran remained optimistic, assuring fans of his scheduled concert later that night.

The police's actions have drawn backlash from fans online, with some criticizing the stringent rules governing public performances in India, likening the situation to an 'uncleocracy' where arbitrary regulations dampen youthful enjoyment. However, local BJP MP PC Mohan stressed that international celebrities must abide by local legislation, stating, "no permit, no performance."

During his visit to India, Sheeran is on a 15-day tour, following successful concerts in Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai, with upcoming shows planned in northeastern Shillong and the capital, Delhi. He previously delighted fans by performing two Telugu songs alongside singer Shilpa Rao at his Bengaluru concert. Sheeran's time in India has included collaborations distinct to the Indian music scene, like his work with singer Diljit Dosanjh and sitar artist Megha Rawoot.

With a growing appetite for live music and increased disposable income among the population, the country is becoming a significant player in the global concert market. According to a recent report from Bank of Baroda, India’s live concert industry could bloom into an economic force worth approximately $700-900 million (£550-730 million), paralleling the excitement generated by recent performances from other international stars like Dua Lipa and Coldplay.
