Hansard first rose to prominence in the 1991 film The Commitments and later won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008 for “Falling Slowly,” with partner Markéta Irglová. He was also the long‑time frontman of the acclaimed band The Frames.
Following the tragedy, the music world reacted with heartfelt tributes. Bruce Springsteen posted, “Here on E Street, we are heartbroken.” Ed Sheeran added, “He was such an incredible human, an incredible force.” U2 frontman Bono likewise offered a tribute, calling Hansard “the most musical and mischievous archangel of Ballymun.”
The late musician was celebrated for his philanthropic work, notably an annual Christmas Eve busk that raised funds for the homeless since 2010. The Simon Community, which serves the homeless, called his legacy “devastated.”
