A planned forum focusing on LGBTQ+ themes in Malaysia has been indefinitely postponed following a wave of online harassment and firm rebukes from government officials. This incident serves as a stark illustration of the growing power of religious conservatism within the country's political landscape, as the administration of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim seeks to fortify its standing with the Muslim majority.

The forum, titled “Pride Care: Queer Stories & Sexual Health Awareness,” was set to take place next month and was organized by the youth branch of a smaller opposition party. However, attempts to promote the event on social media sparked a virulent reaction, with hateful messages and threats emerging from various online communities. Many of these messages urged the Royal Malaysian Police to take action against the forum.

The government's stance against LGBTQ+ issues has become increasingly rigid under the influence of the conservative Islamist party, Parti Islam SeMalaysia, currently the largest in the lower house of Parliament. This party has expressed concerns that the Anwar administration is neglecting Islamic values, putting pressure on the government to take a more conservative approach.

In previous statements, Prime Minister Anwar had exhibited a measure of tolerance towards the LGBTQ+ community. In a 2023 interview, he stated that while public disapproval of homosexuality exists, he does not condone harassment against individuals based on their sexual orientation.

However, the rhetoric has shifted with officials like Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, the religious affairs minister, describing the upcoming event as a promotion of “deviant culture.” This escalation in negative sentiment towards LGBTQ+ gatherings suggests a potential new chapter in Malaysia’s stance on sexual and gender diversity, coinciding with a notable increase in religious conservatism in the region.
