In brief
A Ukrainian drone reportedly struck a car near Russia‑held Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant early Tuesday, killing two people including a female station employee. The incident is the third fatality in two weeks and the 13th since April. The plant’s management condemned the attack and the IAEA has urged military restraint around the facility.
A Ukrainian drone struck a car near Russia‑held Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant early Tuesday, killing two people, including a female station employee, the plant’s management said.
The plant management said the attack killed “two people in a car, including a female employee at the station.” No further details were released.
It noted the employee was the third person killed at the plant in the past two weeks and the 13th since April.
“Attacks on civilian cars, killing of peaceful people – this is targeted terrorism. People must not become targets,” the plant’s statement read.
Last week the IAEA reported that an employee at the plant had been killed, but gave no details; IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi repeatedly called for military restraint around the facility, which is offline.
Ukraine did not comment on the incident.
The Russian‑controlled plant, seized by Russian forces in the early weeks of the February 2022 invasion, is Europe’s largest with six reactors, and each side has regularly accused the other of actions that might jeopardise nuclear safety.
In July, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom head said that the plant’s chief engineer had been killed by a Ukrainian drone near the station, a claim that underscores how often the site has appeared in conflict reports.
