In brief
A unique community in Culdesac Tempe, Arizona, is redefining urban living by prioritizing a car-free environment. Residents, including local families, embrace their new lifestyle marked by walkable pathways and accessible amenities, showcasing a shift towards sustainable and community-oriented development.
In the suburbs of Phoenix, a groundbreaking community initiative is taking shape at Culdesac Tempe, which boldly aims to eliminate cars from everyday life. The neighborhood, designed with pedestrian-friendly walkways, boutique shops, and picturesque courtyards, offers a refreshing take on development patterns that typically prioritize vehicles.Andre Rouhani and Gabriela Reyes, a couple with young children, were captivated by the model when they visited Culdesac Tempe. To their astonishment, upon inquiring about parking provisions, they discovered that no resident parking existed. Undeterred, they reassessed their family’s needs, ultimately concluding that the conveniences offered by the neighborhood outweighed the challenges presented by their car-free decision. They gave their vehicle to a family member and moved into Culdesac in December, celebrating their choice as one of the best life decisions they ever made. Culdesac Tempe is presented as the first car-free neighborhood intentionally developed in the United States, drawing inspiration from traditional towns in Italy and Greece that flourished before the automobile era. As communities continue to grapple with environmental challenges and urban sprawl, the existence of this innovative project may herald a new urban living paradigm that encourages walkability, sustainability, and communal living.
