In brief

Syria's government has declared a cease-fire in response to severe sectarian violence, with U.S. involvement facilitating the new agreement. President Ahmed al-Shara described the situation as critical, urging armed groups to cease hostilities. The conflict has drawn in Israel and heightened concerns about regional stability.

The Syrian government proclaimed a cease-fire on Saturday, intending to redeploy its military forces in the southern province of Sweida to address a surge in sectarian violence that has claimed hundreds of lives in recent days. In a televised address, President Ahmed al-Shara asserted that despite challenging circumstances, the Syrian government has managed to restore a degree of calm amidst turmoil, indicating that the recent atrocities represent a “dangerous turning point” for the country. Al-Shara expressed concern regarding Israeli involvement, stating that it has exacerbated the instability in the region. ‘The Israeli intervention has pushed the country into a precarious phase,’ he commented. Earlier in the day, U.S. special envoy to Syria, Thomas J. Barrack Jr., announced that Israel and Syria had reached an agreement for a truce, branding it a potential “breakthrough.” He called on various armed groups in Syria, particularly Bedouin and Druse fighters, to voluntarily disarm to facilitate peace. Despite the announcement, it remained unclear how this latest cease-fire differed from an earlier agreement set forth by Syrian authorities on Wednesday, which was supported by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Following this, Syrian state media reported the withdrawal of government forces from Sweida, which initially seemed to decrease violence, although sporadic clashes continued in some areas.
