In brief

Recent heavy rains have resulted in tragic losses and widespread infrastructural damage across multiple southeastern states

At least 10 individuals have died due to devastating floods caused by torrential rains that swept through several southeastern states over the weekend. Kentucky has reported nine deaths, prompting Governor Andy Beshear to declare a state of emergency. Approximately 1,000 residents found themselves stranded and needed rescue as floodwaters surged. The affected regions may soon face colder, drier conditions that could bring snow and ice, alongside potential further disruption, according to BBC meteorologist John Hutchinson.A man in Georgia was also killed when an uprooted tree crashed into his home. States including Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina experienced various storm alerts over the weekend, many of which had already sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Helene in September. Thousands of homes lost power during the deluge, although numbers have since decreased from hundreds of thousands to tens of thousands.Kentucky experienced significant rainfall, with some areas recording as much as 6 inches (15 cm). This rapid downpour led to swollen river levels, trapping vehicles and rendering many roads impassable. Among the deceased in Kentucky, a mother and her seven-year-old child were counted, as well as a 73-year-old man. One anxious resident from Knott County, Danny Laferty, expressed fears of losing everything again while still recovering from previous flooding. In response to the disaster, Beshear has reached out to the White House for an emergency declaration and federal assistance. Though President Donald Trump has suggested abolishing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), he approved the disaster declaration on Sunday, allowing FEMA to assist with recovery efforts. In Tennessee's Obion County, the intense rainfall caused a levee break, leading to rapid flooding. The small town of Rives saw severe inundation following the breach, prompting local officials to declare a state of emergency and mandate evacuations. Meanwhile, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey also announced an emergency state for over a dozen counties.Kristi Noem, head of the Department of Homeland Security, confirmed communication with governors of impacted states, asserting readiness to provide necessary resources and support. The weather phenomenon is shifting, bringing heavy snowfall to Canada, while parts of the central US are bracing for exceptionally cold temperatures and hazardous wind chills in the upcoming week.
