In brief

The Palestine Red Crescent Society condemned an Israeli military strike on its headquarters in Gaza, claiming it resulted in one death and several injuries. The UN has called for an investigation as humanitarian conditions deteriorate.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that the Israeli military launched an assault on its headquarters in Khan Younis, Gaza, early on Sunday, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to three others. The humanitarian organization asserted that the attack, which caused significant damage and ignited a fire, was "deliberate" and emphasized that the building's presence was well-known and marked with the protective red emblem. In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged they were examining the allegations of damage to the PRCS facility and confirmed that "uninvolved individuals in the Khan Younis area were harmed as a result of an IDF strike." Clips shared by the PRCS on social media depicted flames engulfing the building and the aftermath showing stark signs of destruction, including bloodstains on the floor. The PRCS identified the victim as Omar Isleem and expressed their sorrow over his death, confirming that two staff members and a civilian were also injured during the incident. The organization reiterated that the targeted building was clearly marked, stating, "This was not a mistake," and called for accountability regarding the protection of humanitarian personnel.According to the PRCS, since the onset of the ongoing conflict, 51 of its staff members and volunteers in Gaza have lost their lives due to Israeli military actions, with 29 killed while carrying out humanitarian duties. The UN Human Rights office condemned the killings of emergency workers in Gaza, urging an independent investigation into the incidents. The report from the PRCS follows numerous warnings about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. On the same day, the Hamas-led Gaza health ministry announced that at least 104 individuals had been killed due to Israeli military actions, including 65 individuals seeking assistance.Additionally, reports from Al-Awda hospital indicated that five people were fatally shot, and 30 more were injured due to Israeli forces near a prominent aid distribution location run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The IDF claimed that warning shots were fired towards a gathering that posed a threat; however, they reported no confirmed casualties from those shots.Latest UN statistics revealed that at least 1,373 Palestinians have perished while attempting to access food since late May, with many fatalities attributed to military actions near GHF sites. Although the GHF denied the UN's death toll, Israel attributed the chaos near aid centers to Hamas provocations.Egyptian media reported that two trucks containing essential fuel remained on standby at the border, as medical personnel have warned of critical shortages for weeks. Although Israel has partially lifted its blockade on aid and goods into Gaza, humanitarian agencies argue that more assistance is desperately required to avert widespread famine and malnutrition. According to the Hamas health ministry, six additional malnutrition-related deaths were recorded, bringing the cumulative total to 175 fatalities, including 93 children since the conflict's escalation.Israel remains resolute in denying any intentional blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza, accusing international agencies of failing to deliver support effectively. Recently, the IDF reported the airdrop of 136 aid packages, containing food supplies for residents in both northern and southern Gaza, in collaboration with several countries, including the UAE, Jordan, and France. This attack comes in the wake of the IDF's campaign launched in response to the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and numerous hostages taken on October 7, 2023. Meanwhile, the Hamas-run health ministry claims that the death toll in Gaza has now exceeded 60,839.
