In brief

Senior DPRK official Kim Yo Jong condemned the United States for linking the record $6 billion Binance heist to a North Korean hacking group, calling the claim an attempt to defame the country. She accused the U.S. of spreading misunderstanding and undermining international opinion, and said North Korea will monitor the provocation and reconsider the U.S.’s hostile attitude. North Korean authorities have denied any role in the hack, dismissing the U.S. announcement as a “trite provocation.”

Senior Democratic People’s Republic of Korea official Kim Yo Jong slammed the United States on Monday after Washington linked the recent Binance cryptocurrency heist to a hacking group allegedly supported by North Korea. She called the claim a defamation and a violation of the country’s sovereignty, accusing the U.S. of spreading misunderstanding and undermining international public opinion.

The Binance exchange said on Friday that hackers stole more than 6 billion U.S. dollars in what is believed to be the largest cryptocurrency heist on record. The U.S. government has stated that the stolen funds were linked to a North‑Korean‑sponsored hacking group, a claim Kim Yo Jong denounced as “trying to denigrate her country as a cyber criminal state.”

Kim Yo Jong, department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, warned that the U.S. move to “mislead the international public opinion” was a grave political provocation. She added that North Korea would closely monitor the persistent U.S. provocations and would reconsider its stance on the “very unpleasant U.S. hostile attitude.”

North Korea has denied any involvement in the Binance hack, dismissing the U.S. announcement as a “trite provocation.” The claim that the state is linked to the heist has been rejected by Korean officials as absurd, according to a separate report.
