In brief

NASA announced the X‑70 Fractal, capable of carrying up to 907 kg of experimental payloads, cruising at Mach 0.75, reaching 13.7 km altitude and traveling over 2,778 km. The new platform will conduct its first NASA‑branded flight within the next two years, according to agency officials.

NASA announced the X‑70 Fractal, a crewed experimental aircraft designed to push the limits of flight‑control and maneuverability research, during a summit at its Kennedy Space Center headquarters in Florida on November 5. The announcement came from Xinhua, which reported that the X‑70 is aimed at accelerating the testing of advanced aviation technologies. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman was quoted by Xinhua saying the X‑70 "provides a crewed, high‑performance platform to test advanced flight‑control, maneuverability, and other cutting‑edge technologies in real flight."

Key performance figures released by Xinhua include a cruise speed of Mach 0.75, an operational ceiling of 13.7 km, and a range that exceeds 2,778 km. The aircraft can carry up to 907 kg of experimental payloads in both internal and external locations, according to NASA statements cited by the source. Its maximum take‑off weight is 4,536 kg.

In its own words, NASA said the X‑70 is slated to earn its first flight under the agency’s banner within the next two years. The new platform will allow scientists to push the boundaries of maneuverability and flight‑control technology in a higher‑performance, crewed environment that had not been previously explored in free‑flight tests.
