Following a secret vote, officials responded to ongoing calls for the removal of names honoring composer Josef Reiter and entertainer Franz Resl, both of whom had ties to the Nazi party. A report indicated maintaining the current street names was unconstitutional. The name changes will affect approximately 200 households in the area.

This decision has been lauded by the Mauthausen Committee as a significant action in acknowledging the country’s dark past, particularly in regard to victims of the Holocaust and the Mauthausen concentration camp where around 90,000 individuals lost their lives. Committee leaders expressed appreciation for the community's support in this endeavor.

Renaming suggestions included honoring local figures who resisted the Nazis, such as Lea Olczak, a former deputy mayor whose father was a Mauthausen victim, and Maria Stromberger, a nurse who participated in the resistance at Auschwitz. While some streets in Austria have already been renamed to sever ties with Nazi history, many remain, contributing to ongoing discussions about the country's role during World War II.

The move aims to better reflect Austria's post-war commitment to peace and democracy as it confronts its complex past.
