In brief

The US Midwest and South were struck by tornadoes over the weekend, resulting in at least 40 deaths and extensive property damage. Missouri experienced the highest toll, with 12 fatalities, while Texas and Kansas faced lethal dust storms that contributed to multiple vehicle crashes. The chaotic weather conditions, affecting over 100 million residents, triggered nearly 150 wildfires in Oklahoma, causing additional fatalities in surrounding states of Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi. Emergency declarations were issued in several areas to mobilize assistance as the damage left hundreds of homes, schools, and businesses in ruins.

States like Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, and North Carolina issued flood advisories amid the chaos. As reported by PowerOutageUS, more than 320,000 people were left without power on Sunday evening due to the extreme conditions. Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe described the destruction wrought by the tornadoes as "staggering," highlighting the obliteration of homes and infrastructure. In one example, a tornado left a Butler County home unrecognizable, described as a mere "debris field" by the local coroner. Meanwhile, Oklahoma fought against fierce wildfires fueled by winds reaching up to 83 mph, which ultimately resulted in four additional fatalities as many structures were consumed by flames. In Kansas, a dust storm led to a tragic crash involving more than 55 vehicles, claiming at least eight lives. Texas also experienced a severe dust storm that caused a significant automobile pile-up, resulting in four fatalities.Around six people died in Mississippi due to tornado impacts, while Alabama reported three deaths, including that of an elderly woman. Arkansas officials confirmed three additional fatalities and 29 injuries.President Donald Trump announced the deployment of the National Guard in Arkansas to aid storm response efforts and urged the public to join him in prayers for all those who have been affected by the severe weather. As communities begin to assess the damage, stories of resilience and recovery are likely to emerge from this widespread devastation.
