In brief
Nazari was located by fellow hikers after surviving on limited resources during his extended absence.
On Wednesday, December 26, 2024, Hadi Nazari, a 23-year-old hiker, was found alive after being lost for nearly two weeks in the dense wilderness of Kosciuszko National Park, located approximately 240 miles south of Sydney. The experienced hiker and his two friends began their adventure, but when he failed to reach a designated campground, his friends raised the alarm about his disappearance at around 8:45 p.m. that same day. Nazari had ventured alone on the Hannels Spur trail around six hours before he was expected to reconnect with his friends. A massive search operation involving approximately 400 personnel conducted air and ground searches for 13 days yielded hope among the rescuers, buoyed by the knowledge of Nazari's hiking skills and the camping gear he carried. During searches, a few personal items believed to belong to Nazari were found, including rubbish and hiking poles near the Kosciuszko River on New Year’s Eve, alongside a lighter and remnants of a campfire at the Geehi River shortly thereafter. However, the challenging terrain of dense bushland raised concerns for rescuers, as some parts were so thick they were unable even to see their feet. Finally, on January 8, a group of hikers passed near Blue Lake, about six miles from the campground, where they encountered Nazari. He informed them of his situation, stating he was lost and in need of water. Following his rescue, emergency services were contacted, and Nazari was airlifted to safety to receive medical attention from paramedics. His survival story emphasizes both the resilience of individuals in the wilderness and the importance of safety protocols while engaging in outdoor activities.
