Japan’s benchmark Nikkei Stock Index fell more than 3 percent on Wednesday, dropping 1,915.36 points to 61,166.08, as investors reacted to uncertainty ahead of the U.S. midterm election results, Xinhua reported.

At 10:43 a.m. local time, the 225‑issue Nikkei was down 3.04 percent from Monday, a loss that marked the largest swing on the market in recent weeks.

The broader Topix index was also lower, falling 70.14 points, or 1.78 percent, to 3,860.14, Xinhua noted.

Japanese markets were closed on Tuesday for a public holiday, which relieved some pressure but left Wednesday’s fall intact.
