In brief
In a remarkable career shift, George Clarke, a 34-year-old festival worker from Bristol, is gearing up to run the world’s most southerly post office located at Port Lockroy in Antarctica. Despite being new to postal services, Clarke expressed excitement about this unprecedented adventure that combines his love for the outdoors with an opportunity to manage essential mail services for cruise ship passengers visiting the region.
Clarke, who has a background in setting up tents at music festivals, described the interesting interview process that included completing quirky tasks such as erecting a tent blindfolded and wearing oven mitts. For five months, he will live with a small team in a shared Nissen hut on Goudier Island, amid a friendly Gentoo penguin colony, choosing to limit their use of internet to enhance their experience in the remote, picturesque surroundings. While Clarke acknowledges he faces a learning curve in this new role, he looks forward to processing letters and postcards, as well as enjoying leisure activities like drawing and exchanging favorite books with his teammates. Before embarking on this journey, the team will travel from the UK to Argentina, followed by a treacherous boat ride across the Drake Passage. Amidst the excitement, Clarke anticipates savoring his morning coffee while enjoying breathtaking Antarctic views and possibly spotting whales, marking the beginning of his extraordinary journey.
