Dubai Municipality announced on 5 November 2026 that it has become the first entity in the Middle East to receive ISO 14064‑1 certification for measuring and reporting greenhouse‑gas emissions. The certification marks a milestone in the city’s efforts to strengthen the reliability of environmental data and enhance governance of climate performance.

The endorsement reflects the Dubai Municipality’s adoption of internationally recognised methods for quantifying and documenting emissions, a move that will help the city’s planners and operators identify opportunities for improvement and develop targeted initiatives that support resource efficiency and emissions reduction.

Eng. Nasser BuShehab, CEO of the Planning and Governance Sector at Dubai Municipality, said:

Achieving conformity with ISO 14064‑1 represents an important advancement in our approach to institutional governance and environmental performance. Reliable, consistent, and transparent data will strengthen our ability to monitor progress over time and guide decisions that improve the environmental impact of our operations.

The ISO 14064‑1 standard establishes principles and requirements for quantifying and reporting greenhouse‑gas emissions at an organizational level. It provides a structured approach to identify emissions sources, define reporting boundaries, collect and analyse relevant data, and develop reliable inventories. By complying with these requirements, Dubai Municipality can ensure that its emissions reporting is consistent, transparent, and credible, forming a dependable evidence base for monitoring performance and supporting broader sustainability objectives across the city.
