In brief

A British tourist has tragically passed away while trekking with a friend in the challenging Himalaya region of northern India near Dharamshala. The two men were navigating difficult terrain when one of them suffered critical injuries during their descent from a popular route known as the Triund trek. Local emergency services reported that after being rescued and transported down the mountain for nearly a day, the injured man was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

According to reports, the hiking duo encountered trouble while descending the approximately 7km (4.3 miles) route when one of the men fell, leading the other to seek help from a nearby village. The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Response Force received the distress call around 6 PM on Sunday, sending a team of 10 rescuers to the mountainous area. After a strenuous trek of four hours, they located the two trekkers at around 10:30 PM, with one requiring immediate medical attention.Rescue operations were hampered by rough terrain and multiple crossings of a stream, complicating the descent. It took nearly two hours for the team to move just 100 meters due to the challenging conditions. With the weather worsening, additional rescuers were called in the morning to assist with the transport. After finally reaching the hospital at approximately 5:08 PM on Monday, the injured man was pronounced dead. The local authorities had previously enacted a temporary ban on trekking in high-altitude areas, a measure that the tourists reportedly were not aware of. The victim's identity has not yet been released, but the Foreign Office is currently providing support to his family during this difficult time.
