In brief

Binance confirmed a security incident that led to a freeze of roughly $3 billion in on‑chain assets and a temporary suspension of withdrawals, while saying it will cover any user losses using its $6.34 billion reserve. The exchange is cooperating with law enforcement and blockchain partners to recover the stolen tokens. Other outlets reported a potential issue and a $40.6 million bitcoin loss on a Facebook post from Global Current.

Binance announced on Saturday that a security incident has impacted the exchange, prompting it to freeze approximately $3 billion of on‑chain assets and temporarily halt withdrawals while it conducts a security overhaul. The company said it has set aside more than $6.34 billion in reserves, including its Secure Asset Fund for Users, to cover any losses and maintain customer balances.

In a statement, Binance said its initial investigation found no evidence of private key leaks and that general trading activity remains unaffected. The exchange is collaborating with law enforcement agencies, token issuers, blockchain intelligence firms and industry partners to track and recover the affected tokens.

Binance declined to reveal specific details about the breach, but confirmed that more than $5 billion of the reserves are held in the exact impacted token assets. The company also revoked authorizations on affected addresses and said it will provide updates on the restoration of withdrawal services, release a comprehensive technical post‑mortem report, and publish an updated proof‑of‑reserves report when available.

Other reports added context to the incident. Metro News reported that Binance is investigating a potential security issue, with withdrawals and deposits temporarily suspended in the meantime. The Alabama News Wire echoed similar information, noting a temporary suspension of deposits and withdrawals while Binance works with law enforcement and freezes funds.

A Facebook post from Global Current claimed that Binance had lost $40.6 million in bitcoin due to a large‑scale security breach. That claim appears only in the Social media source and is not corroborated by the other outlets.
