At least 50 people were killed and 179 were injured when two high‑speed trains collided near Urda station in Toledo Province, Spain, on Wednesday morning, Xinhua reported. This crash – involving a Renfe state‑owned train and a stationary Iryo private train – has brought the Madrid‑Andalusia line to a halt.

The Saudi Press Agency, however, announced that 64 people died and 80 were injured in the same incident, detailing the same location on the Madrid‑Andalusia line and noting that Adif has suspended services on the route.

The collision occurred at about 8:54 a.m. local time (07:54 GMT) close to Urda, roughly 120 km south of Madrid. The Renfe train is said to have struck the rear of the Iryo train, causing two carriages to derail and tumble down an embankment.

Spanish railway infrastructure operator Adif confirmed that rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended following the accident.

"Shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo," Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote on social media, adding that emergency services are on the ground to assist those affected.

Only Xinhua noted that four Chinese nationals were aboard the trains involved, with one sustaining a minor injury.

The collision comes just nine months after a similar accident near Adamuz in the southern province of Córdoba that killed 46 people.
