In brief
Police have charged Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc with conspiracy to commit arson over fires linked to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The incendiary incidents occurred at two buildings and a vehicle previously owned by the PM. Counterterrorism forces are involved in the investigation.
A second man has been charged by police over the fires that targeted properties linked to Britain's Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. Stanislav Carpiuc, a 26-year-old Romanian national, faces charges of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police released on Tuesday. These charges stem from three separate fires that occurred earlier this month. The first blaze erupted in the early hours of May 12 outside Starmer's prior residence in Kentish Town, north London. The Prime Minister and his family resided there until they moved to the official prime ministerial abode at Downing Street after Starmer's election victory. The second fire took place the day before at another residential site in Islington, while the third involved a vehicle fire in Kentish Town on May 8. Reports indicate that Starmer lived in the Islington building during the 1990s and had once owned the vehicle that was later set ablaze and subsequently sold to a neighbor. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, though the doorway of the Kentish Town house, currently rented out, sustained damage.Owing to the association with a prominent public figure, the investigation is being led by counterterrorism police. Carpiuc is accused of conspiring together with another individual, Roman Lavrynovych, a 21-year-old Ukrainian who previously resided in Sydenham, southeast London. Lavrynovych appeared in court last week regarding the incident.During the court hearing, prosecuting attorney Sarah Przybylska stated that the targeted car and both properties are connected to the Prime Minister, but asserted that "the alleged offending is unexplained" at this time. Carpiuc was arrested on Saturday at London Luton Airport by counterterrorism officers and is scheduled for a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. This is still a developing story, and further updates will follow.
