Violence erupted across France on Saturday as protests over the rising cost of living and school shortages turned deadly, with police arresting more than 400 demonstrators and thousands of others taking to the streets.

In Paris, riot police fired tear gas and water cannon, while buildings were set on fire, including the Lyon tourism office and the town hall in Limoges. Looting spread to city halls and businesses across the country.

Sixty police officers were injured, two hospitalized, and a protester lost a hand after a grenade explosion in Saint‑Étienne.

Prime Minister Lecornu and President Macron vowed to prosecute those who vandalised public property, while the government offered concessions such as hiring 3,000 extra teachers. The unrest continues as France heads toward a tense presidential election later this year.
