CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — Last year marked a pause in the violent deaths associated with the group known as the Zizians, a situation that arose after a U.S. border agent's murder and the arrests of three members in western Maryland. Currently, seven members are incarcerated across three states, awaiting trial on various charges.
Law enforcement quickly linked individuals Jack Ziz LaSota, Michelle Zajko, and Daniel Blank to homicide investigations spanning California, Pennsylvania, and Vermont after they were discovered residing in box trucks on private land last February.
Maryland state Trooper Brandon Jeffries reported, All the suspects involved are to be questioned regarding other crimes that have occurred across the country and have ties with the Zizians Cult. Their prosecutions have faced slow progress due to legal delays.
Outsiders have termed the group as the Zizians, composed of young, highly intelligent individuals with radical views on veganism, animal rights, gender identity, and technology. They have been implicated in several violent incidents, including the deaths of a California landlord and Zajko's parents in Pennsylvania.
Legal Woes and Delays
Jury selection for the trials was set to commence this week in Cumberland for LaSota, Zajko, and Blank, predominantly on drug and weapon possession charges. The trial has been postponed to June because Zajko dismissed her attorney and has been making various allegations about misconduct by prison informants.
"In the interest of Hope, Justice and Truth... the defense moves to dismiss this case," Zajko declared in handwritten filings filled with complex claims of rights violations.
Border Agent Tragedy and Further Implications
Zajko is also implicated in supplying firearms to a Zizian involved in a deadly shootout in Vermont that resulted in the death of a Border Patrol agent. Despite claims against the authority, investigations into her allegations appear to be progressing slowly.
Pending Murder Trials
Two additional Zizians, Suri Dao and Alexander Leatham, face charges related to a 2022 assault that led to the death of a fellow member in California. Their trial is indefinitely postponed, while LaSota awaits federal charges related to weapons use and possible evasion of law enforcement.
LaSota's history raises concern as authorities believe she faked her own death to avoid facing charges linked to the suspected murder of Zajko's parents, which remains unresolved.
Strangers in the Woods
The discovery of the Zizians in Maryland raised eyebrows among local residents. One witness reported that the group had approached him for shelter, prompting him to alert authorities after feeling uneasy about their presence.
The Zizians have been collaborating on their defense strategies while incarcerated, though efforts for bail by Blank’s parents have been noted amidst the ongoing cases.
