MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alberto Castañeda Mondragón’s painful memories emerged after a brutal encounter with immigration officers during his arrest last month in Minnesota. The images of violence are chiseled into his consciousness.
The Mexican immigrant shared with The Associated Press that on January 8, ICE agents dragged him from a car and violently restrained him, resulting in severe injuries, including eight skull fractures and five brain hemorrhages.
Castañeda Mondragón, 31, highlights how his detention turned into a nightmare. He recalls being assaulted twice, first during his arrest and again at a detention facility, despite having no prior criminal record.
Immigrant claims unprovoked attack
ICE officials initially claimed Castañeda Mondragón ran into a wall, but medical staff at Hennepin County Medical Center quickly dismissed this narrative, asserting that the injuries were inconsistent with such a fall.
The violence continued during his time in custody where he was reportedly beaten again, leaving medical professionals shocked by the extent of his injuries.
Despite institutional silence, several local lawmakers in Minnesota, including Governor Tim Walz, have urged for thorough investigations into the treatment of Castañeda Mondragón and others in ICE custody.
Push for accountability
Local representatives have voiced their concerns over the abuse of force in immigration enforcement and are advocating for accountability measures. Castañeda Mondragón, motivated by his experience, plans to file complaints and push for deeper investigations into ICE practices. The severity of his situation has spotlighted significant issues within the immigration enforcement system.
