In a devastating accident, nine individuals have lost their lives and 32 others sustained injuries following an explosion at a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir. The tragic event occurred when a stockpile of confiscated explosives, which had been seized just days prior, detonated.
The explosion took place on Friday evening at the Nowgam police station, where the explosives were reportedly being prepared for forensic examination. The region's director general of police, Nalin Prabhat, described the incident as a very unfortunate mishap during the handling of the explosives, with the explosion occurring around 23:20 local time.
Authorities have confirmed that this was an accidental detonation, not linked to any terrorist activities, and emphasized that further speculation into the cause is unwarranted. The police station suffered extensive damage, with reports of adjacent buildings also affected.
Eyewitness accounts described a scene of chaos, with multiple vehicles engulfed in flames and debris scattered across the vicinity. The blast was so powerful that body parts were found several hundred meters away from the site.
Among the victims were police officers, forensic staff, and other individuals who were present at the police station. The region's Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, expressed his condolences and has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic explosion, describing it as deeply anguishing.
