Sydney Beach Shark Attack Leaves Woman Seriously Injured
A 35‑year‑old woman was seriously injured after a shark attacked her during a morning swim at Coogee Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
According to New South Wales Police, emergency services were called to the scene on Saturday morning. Police say the woman was pulled from the water by members of the public who supplied first aid. She suffered severe arm and leg injuries.
The victim was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in critical condition. To prevent further incidents, several beaches in the area were closed until authorities confirmed there was no imminent threat.
Witnesses reported seeing a large amount of blood on the water and a frantic swimmer trying to pull the victim to safety. Police and health officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the attack.
This event follows a recent fatal shark bite that claimed a diver off Perth, as well as other fatalities in Australian waters over the past year. Although shark attacks in Australia are relatively frequent, most result in non‑fatal injuries.
Since 1791, Australia has recorded approximately 1,300 shark attacks, with more than 260 deaths. Authorities advise swimmers to heed beach warnings and stay alert in popular surf spots where protective measures are in place.
