Republican U.S. Representative Troy Nehls of Texas announced Saturday that he will retire from Congress once his term concludes in 2026 to dedicate more time to his family. Nehls, a known supporter of former President Donald Trump—famous for wearing Trump's mugshot on a T-shirt—shared the news first with Trump, stating on the social platform X, President Trump has always been a strong ally for our district and a true friend, and I wanted him to hear it from me first. In his announcement, Nehls endorsed his twin brother, Trever Nehls, to succeed him in Congress; Trever has confirmed his intention to run, emphasizing his support for Trump in his campaign. While the White House has not commented on the retirement, Nehls has been a polarizing figure in Congress, having voted to challenge the outcome of the 2020 presidential election and having been appointed by former House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy to a select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol insurrection. Nehls, who has served in Congress since 2021, previously spent over three decades in law enforcement and two decades in the Army Reserve. In the past election, he comfortably won his district, located southwest of Houston, by more than 24 percentage points.
