In brief

In Bethlehem, a city that typically thrives with Christmas joy, the atmosphere is anything but merry this year. Visitors are scarce, and festive decorations that once adorned the streets are absent as the community mourns the ongoing conflict in Gaza. For the second year in a row, public Christmas celebrations have been canceled due to the war, leaving Palestinian Christians to engage only in religious ceremonies and family gatherings.

"This should be a time of joy and celebration," laments Reverend Dr. Munther Isaac, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, who notes Bethlehem's solidarity with Gaza during this difficult period. The church's Nativity scene poignantly depicts baby Jesus on a pile of rubble, symbolizing the devastation felt across the region. Dr. Isaac’s sermons have resonated deeply with local residents, who express anger and despair over the perceived indifference of the global Christian community regarding the suffering of Palestinians. The impact of the conflict has resonated profoundly throughout the community, particularly as many Bethlehemite Christians maintain familial ties to those in Gaza. The plight faced by relatives is dire, with reports of extreme conditions including starvation and a lack of medical assistance. As Bethlehem’s economy suffers from the absence of tourists, many local workers, including tour guides and souvenir sellers, are struggling to make ends meet. With escalating tensions and increased restrictions imposed by Israel, the fear of violence lurks in the shadows, prompting some families to emigrate in search of safety and better opportunities. Yet, amidst the hardships, there are efforts to bring hope to those in need. Local organizations such as the Palestine Lions Club are stepping in to provide food and financial support for struggling families in Bethlehem. As Wael Shaer, head of the Palestine Lions Club, delivers food parcels to those impacted by the ongoing crisis, he exemplifies the spirit of Christmas through kindness and community support. "As you know, Christmas is the spirit of giving and love and joy," he says, striving to spread a little cheer in these challenging times.
