South Africa Midfielder Jayden Adams Dies at 25
Jayden Adams, 25, who played for South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has died in Cape Town, news released by police and government officials.
The body of the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was found in the Schotschekloof suburb of central Cape Town on Saturday morning. Authorities have opened an investigation, but the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Bafana Bafana’s minister of sport, arts and culture Gayton McKenzie said, “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents. The nation mourns alongside his family, teammates and supporters.”
Adams featured in all three group-stage matches at the World Cup, including a 1‑1 draw with the Czech Republic, even as he coped with the recent death of his grandmother. He had made his international debut in 2022 and emerged as a key player in the squad that reached the knockout stages for the first time.
The South African Football Players Union described the loss as “devastated” and noted that Adams had already won the Premier Soccer League and CAF Champions League titles following his transfer to Sundowns in January 2025.
Adams began his career at Stellenbosch FC, moved to Sundowns where he developed into a prolific midfielder, and played a pivotal role in South Africa’s semi‑final run at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations before taking his home‑grown talent onto the global World Cup stage.
