Police confirmed that at least three people were killed and three others suffered critical injuries. Eight survivors have been rescued so far, but many others are presumed trapped under rubble.
The building, which housed ten dormitories, was undergoing basement excavation work by a contractor who had extended the hostel’s footprint. The owner had leased the adjacent shop for 100 years and had begun additional construction, allegedly strengthening the upper levels but leaving the pillars below weak.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered the evacuation of neighbouring buildings as a precaution and declared that “every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped.”
India’s fire department notes that Delhi has seen over a thousand building collapses in the past three years, with poor foundations, sub‑standard materials and unqualified workers cited as major causes. The National Students' Union of India demands a thorough investigation and accountability for the harm caused.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are using hydraulic equipment to clear rubble and are looking for the property owner as authorities assess the structural fault.
