In the heart of Shanghai, traces of the 2022 coronavirus lockdown are gradually fading, but the emotional weight remains heavy. Fu Aiying, a stir-fry restaurant owner, recalls the devastation: her quarantine lasting over a month, during which she lost touch with her community and regular life. Now, with her neighborhood set for demolition, Fu and her few remaining neighbors see their former vibrant surroundings, now lined with darkened storefronts, stifling their spirit.

Like many others, Fu feels the lockdown changed her fundamentally. “Since my time in quarantine, I don’t have a temper anymore. I don’t have a personality anymore,” the 58-year-old shared, her emotions evident. As Shanghai moves on, its residents are left facing the deep scars of personal loss alongside a city constantly evolving.
