Indian wildlife photographer Sachin Rai recalls the breathtaking moments spent capturing the iconic tigress Arrowhead, formally known as T-84, as she deftly hunted crocodiles in the vast Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan. Arrowhead passed away last week at the age of 11, near the picturesque lakes she once ruled. Her death, attributed to illness, cast a shadow over the hearts of many wildlife lovers, including photographers and tour guides, who were drawn to witness her majesty.
Arrowhead's revered reputation stems from her lineage; she was the daughter of Krishna and granddaughter of Machli, two legendary tigresses known for their fierce dominance and extraordinary skills in hunting crocodiles. Notably, Arrowhead had continued this fierce lineage, embodying a blend of grace and strength that made her a formidable presence in the park.
Mr. Rai reflects on her remarkable abilities, noting that even in her declining health, Arrowhead fearlessly tackled crocodiles, earning her the affectionate moniker of "crocodile-hunter." Just days before her passing, she showcased her prowess by killing another crocodile, highlighting the spirit of a warrior till the end.
Despite her fierce nature, Arrowhead faced immense challenges in her life, including being displaced from her territory by her own daughter, Riddhi. Her difficult journey included multiple matings in search of a stable home, indicative of the harsh realities faced by wild tigers. Throughout her life, she gave birth to four litters, but not all of her offspring survived, adding heartbreak to her legacy.
As she battled a tumor in her later years, park officials provided assistance, but this was halted due to incidents involving her cubs. Witnessing Arrowhead's struggle during her last days was heartbreaking for Mr. Rai, who shared the poignant image of her frailty and effort to move. In a touching moment, Arrowhead reportedly returned to her daughter Riddhi's territory shortly before her death, where Riddhi offered her mother a peaceful space to rest, a testament to the bond that transcended their fierce rivalry.
Arrowhead leaves behind a legacy of strength, beauty, and resilience that will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who admired her in the wild. The Ranthambore National Park, her once-thriving domain, will forever remember the iconic tigress who ruled with mighty grace.
