In brief

In a dramatic escalation, Russian forces launched a large-scale ballistic missile and drone assault on Ukraine, causing eight civilian deaths and multiple injuries across cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy. President Zelensky blasted the raid as one of the biggest since 2022, while Ukrainian forces hit Russian oil tankers and depots to cut funding for the war. Ukraine’s air defenses shot down 18 of 41 missiles and 108 drones, but widespread damage to residential buildings, a foreign cargo ship, and critical infrastructure has intensified calls for more interceptors from European allies.

Russia launched a coordinated ballistic missile and drone attack on Ukrainian cities on 19 July 2026, killing at least eight civilians and injuring several more. The dead were spread across Kharkiv (four fatalities), Kyiv (one elderly woman), Zaporizhzhia (two), and Sumy (one).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the assault on Kyiv the "most massive ballistic attack" since the full‑scale invasion began in 2022. He urged for an urgent increase in ballistic‑missile interceptors from European allies to protect civilian areas.

A Turkish‑owned grain cargo ship, travelling in the Black Sea, was struck by Russian missiles, killing five crew members. In retaliation, Ukraine hit three Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea and three oil depots in Russia’s Stavropol region, which were said to finance the war.

National air defences in Kyiv intercepted 18 of 41 incoming missiles and 108 drones flown by Russian forces. Ukraine’s military also used its own drones and missiles to target key infrastructure in the region.

On the outskirts of Kharkiv, a postal terminal was hit, killing four men aged 24–62. The injured suffered serious conditions. Local officials reported that both residential and non‑residential buildings were damaged in the Kyiv strike, including a supermarket and a dormitory.

Over the past week, Zelensky noted that Russian forces had used about 1,450 strike drones, more than 1,640 guided bombs, and 99 missiles. He also highlighted Ukrainian strikes that damaged three oil depots in Stavropol and hit Russian "shadow fleet" tankers.

The latest Kyiv attacks involved a range of weapons, including Iskander and hypersonic Zircon missiles, alongside 125 drones. Ukrainian emergency services reported a blaze at a logistics hub in Bucha district and fires at two warehouses in the city of Tambov and Elektrostal.

The attack on the Wildberries logistics warehouse in Tambov caused seven deaths and 25 injuries, while an Etltrostal facility suffered one death and 37 injuries. Wildberries, the Russian equivalent of Amazon, is valued at approximately $12.6 bn.

Ukraine’s increasing long‑range drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have led to widespread fuel shortages, with Kyiv claiming nearly 43% of Russia’s oil‑refining capacity disabled earlier this month. Moscow has responded by intensifying assaults on Ukrainian cities, prompting Kyiv to seek more ballistic‑missile interceptors from its allies.
