According to a White House statement, First Lady Melania Trump has successfully brokered a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the besieged town of Oleshky. The truce is scheduled to begin on 29 October and will enable the elderly residents—who have been cut off from essential supplies—to receive medical care, food, medicine and clean water.
Oleshky, located in the Kherson region, fell under Russian occupation during the first days of Moscow’s full‑scale invasion in February 2022. With the city isolated, inhabitants have recently resorted to eating garden weeds to survive. The White House described the town as a "front‑line war city on the brink of disaster."
Neither Ukrainian nor Russian officials have yet confirmed the ceasefire, leaving the situation uncertain. The move could bring a pause to fighting and help ease the humanitarian crisis in this key frontline area.
