Authorities launched the investigation after discovering around 200 forged pieces in the collection of a businessman from Pisa in 2023. Seizures were made across multiple countries, with works attributed to over 30 famous artists, such as Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, and Salvador Dali. The Carabinieri cultural squad and Pisa prosecutors describe this as a significant operation aimed at protecting the integrity of the art world, particularly emphasizing the protection of Banksy’s estate.
Pisa Chief Prosecutor Teresa Angela Camelio stated that the bust underscores efforts to combat art forgery, which has seen a rise in recent months, notably with Banksy’s art being a repeated target. In addition to this bust, instances of art theft have become notably frequent, including a recent gallery heist involving Andy Warhol's works in the Netherlands.
Reports indicate that Banksy, whose true identity remains largely concealed, has had his works vandalized or stolen on more than one occasion, highlighting the ongoing challenges related to art ownership and forgery in modern society.
