In brief

Kim Seongmin, founder of Free North Korea Radio, remains resolute in his mission to inform North Koreans of the truth, despite facing terminal cancer. His broadcasts challenge the oppressive censorship of Kim Jong-un’s regime, which increasingly targets outside influences.

For seven grueling years, Kim Seongmin has been engaged in a battle against cancer that has metastasized to his lungs, brain, and liver. Recently, doctors delivered the grim prognosis that he has only months to live, and sleep eludes him at night without the assistance of painkillers. Yet, despite these harrowing personal struggles, Mr. Kim remains steadfast, broadcasting into North Korea twice daily. His mission is to deliver the critical news and information that the citizens of Pyongyang are so fervently deprived of due to the regime’s stringent censorship."North Korea keeps its townsfolk trapped like frogs in a deep well," explained the 62-year-old former North Korean. In his modest yet determined setup on an island west of Seoul, where he resides, Kim meticulously records and edits his segments for Free North Korea Radio. He believes these broadcasts are essential to awaken listeners to the systemic failures of their political situation. For over two decades, North Korean defectors residing in South Korea have successfully infiltrated the secretive state with truth and entertainment via methods such as balloon drops across the border and electronic broadcasts. However, under Kim Jong-un's increasingly paranoid rule, the North Korean government has tightened its grip on any foreign influences that could destabilize his authoritarian reign. The regime is undertaking oppressive measures, including intense crackdowns on those consuming South Korean media, with terrifying penalties such as public execution now commonplace for violators, as documented by North Korean sources and corroborated by a South Korean report. In the face of it all, Kim Seongmin's broadcasts persist, further underscoring his unparalleled commitment to shedding light on the hidden realities of life in North Korea.
