The operation unfolded following surveillance indicating over 400 gang members were poised to attack a local village. Raids were conducted in the Makakkari forest, a known hideout for these groups. The coordinated strikes resulted in the deaths of several high-profile bandit leaders and many of their followers, according to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, spokesperson for the air force.

These recent military actions come amidst a surge of violence in the region, where armed gangs have increasingly targeted communities, resulting in numerous fatalities and kidnappings. The two-week escalation of attacks has also claimed the lives of at least 13 security personnel. The alarming trend of ransom kidnappings has deepened as bandits collaborate with jihadists in the north-east, exacerbating the security crisis.

Despite previous operations that have resulted in the deaths of many gang members, including a recent engagement where 95 were killed, the cycle of violence remains a significant concern for Nigerian authorities.
