The Trump administration's aggressive immigration enforcement strategy has come under fire as community outrage surges in response to increased ICE raids, particularly in Los Angeles. Donald Trump, during his campaign, promised to initiate the largest deportation program targeting criminals, but his administration's scope has since broadened, detaining undocumented migrants, activists, and even tourists over immigration violations.

As of early June, around 51,000 undocumented individuals were held in ICE custody—the highest figure since September 2019. While the administration initially portrayed these operations as aimed at criminals and public safety threats, data reveals that nearly 44% of those detained had no prior criminal record, aside from their status as undocumented.

The department's operations prompted significant unrest when ICE arrested 118 people at various locations in Los Angeles, claiming to target "the worst of the worst," which allegedly included individuals with serious criminal histories. However, cases of undocumented migrants with clean records have proliferated, raising concerns about the nature of these detentions.

The arrests were not limited to undocumented individuals alone; a number of tourists have also found themselves ensnared in ICE's dragnet. Notable cases include a Welsh tourist detained for 19 days over a visa issue and Khaby Lame, the TikTok sensation, who faced detention for overstaying his visa. Other travelers, such as actress Jasmine Mooney, experienced inhumane conditions while awaiting resolution of their visa problems.

Abroad, the administration's immigration policies have resulted in the detainment of over 250 individuals from El Salvador, labeled "alien enemies" under the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts, despite family assertions of their innocence.

In addition, student protesters have faced scrutiny, with a reported 1,600 visa revocations as the administration cracks down on perceived antisemitism on college campuses, leading to the deportation battles of several prominent activists.

Advocates argue that such harsh measures undermine lawful immigration practices and challenge fundamental human rights, with critics calling for a reevaluation of the administration's aggressive tactics. ICE maintains its actions are justified but the wide array of targeted individuals has ignited significant concern and protests across the nation.
