In brief

The government's proposal comes as more than 9.3 million working-age individuals remain unemployed, with urgent calls for fiscal reforms.

Britain's centre-left government unveiled its strategy on Tuesday to reduce the soaring costs of welfare amid a challenging economic landscape. This initiative is part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration’s effort to balance public spending with the need to provide employment opportunities and safeguard vulnerable populations. During a Parliamentary address, Liz Kendall, the work and pensions secretary, emphasized the need for "decisive action" to get those capable of working into jobs while also protecting those unable to work. The proposed measures aim to enable the government to save around five billion pounds (nearly $6.5 billion) by 2030. The Labour Party traditionally champions the welfare state, making this proposed cut to essential benefits particularly controversial. With the UK's population approximately 68 million, over 9.3 million people of working age across England, Scotland, and Wales are currently unemployed, an increase of about 713,000 since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The government reports that approximately 2.8 million individuals are receiving long-term sickness benefits, a number expected to exceed four million if no intervention occurs. Last year alone, the government expended £65 billion on sickness payments.Under growing pressure to boost military financing while addressing critically underfunded public sectors, including health services, the British Treasury is scrutinizing potential budget cuts across various programs.
