In brief
In a significant diplomatic move, Arab leaders convene to address and counter the U.S. President's contentious vision for Gaza.
The leaders of Gulf Arab states, alongside their Egyptian and Jordanian counterparts, are set to meet in Riyadh this Friday to strategize a unified response to President Trump’s provocative plan regarding Gaza. The meeting is a precursor to a larger Arab League summit scheduled for March 4 in Egypt.Trump's plan, which emerged last month, suggested that the United States take control of Gaza, aiming to transform it into the "Riviera of the Middle East." He also controversially proposed relocating Palestinian residents to neighboring countries, sparking widespread condemnation in the Arab world. Following the backlash, Trump’s administration encouraged regional leaders to propose their own solutions.Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted this challenge, stating, “If the Arab countries have a better plan, then that’s great.” In response, nations including Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE have been engaged in extensive discussions to create an alternative framework focused on rebuilding Gaza while ensuring the preservation of its Palestinian population and the viability of a future Palestinian state.Numerous ambitious proposals for Gaza's reconstruction have been suggested; however, challenges remain in gaining concrete support. Among these was an eye-catching proposal from Emirati businessman Khalaf al-Habtoor, who envisioned a plan for rapid redevelopment in "a matter of years, not decades." As the Gulf Arab states rally to present a cohesive response, the outcome of their efforts could significantly impact the region's political dynamics and the future of Palestinian residents.
