ORLANDO, Fla. — A dozen iconic swans that have long inhabited the downtown area of Orlando, Florida, have died unexpectedly in recent days, prompting officials to suspect bird flu as a possible cause. The tragedy has left the community in distress, especially since Lake Eola’s swans have been an integral part of the city’s identity for over a hundred years.

Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan noted via social media that the circumstances surrounding the deaths do not appear suspicious. Before this incident, approximately sixty swans resided in the park, which has also seen a previous bird flu outbreak in February 2024.

Due to the holiday season, specialized veterinarians were not immediately available to assess the situation. The deceased swans are currently secured for necropsy, which will hopefully clarify the cause of death. In Sheehan's words, “We can’t be certain until tests are completed.”

The swans are not just residents of Lake Eola but also symbols of the city, featured in murals and available for rent as swan-shaped pedal-boats, drawing visitors from all over.
