The family of Nolan Wells, an 18‑year‑old from Mississippi, is demanding answers after his death.
Wells went missing on July 4 when he failed to return from a boating outing to Horn Island. He was found dead in the water two days later, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office stating that no foul play was suspected but calling on the public to provide any information.
Civil‑rights attorney Ben Crump, hired by the family, has reported conflicting witness statements and has requested an independent autopsy on the body. An initial autopsy was performed earlier this week, but its results have not yet been released, according to the Jackson County coroner.
Wells played football at Southwest Mississippi Community College and was described as a “happy‑go‑lucky kid” by his coach. His mother, Christine Wonsley, first reported him missing when he did not return by the evening of July 4.
Authorities discovered his body off the island on July 6 after a coordinated search involving local, state and federal agencies. The National Park Service warned that Horn Island has “no staff, drinking water, shelter, facilities or communication.”
Crump has questioned the conflicting claims regarding whether Wells left the island with friends or stayed behind. Both Wonsley parents emphasize that their son would not have chosen to remain on the island alone, stating it was not in his character.
The Sheriff’s Office has circulated a release urging anyone who was on or near Horn Island on July 4 to contact them, seeking any original, unedited photos or videos of alleged altercations or images of Wells.
