In brief

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki's eruption is one of the most significant events in recent months, with authorities on high alert.

A dramatic volcanic eruption on Monday from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in southeastern Indonesia has generated an ash cloud that soared approximately 11 miles into the atmosphere, much greater than the ash plume from its previous eruption last month. This geological event erupted around six minutes into the morning and was followed by multiple subsequent eruptions the same day, as reported by the national volcanic agency. The scale of this latest eruption was remarkable, with the ash column reaching nearly four times the height of the three-mile plume produced during the previous month’s eruption. This latest event follows an earlier eruption in November that tragically resulted in the loss of at least 10 lives and generated an ash cloud just over a mile high.Fortunately, as of Monday afternoon, there were no immediate reports of casualties linked to the latest eruption. The eruption has prompted authorities to maintain the highest alert level on a four-tier scale, indicating significant volcanic activity.Located on the island of Flores, the volcano is situated hundreds of miles from Bali, which is renowned among international tourists, as well as Java, Indonesia's most densely populated island. Although the ash cloud from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was impressive, it still pales in comparison to the extraordinary ash plume produced by the Tonga eruption three years ago, which reached a staggering altitude of 35 miles, surpassing the stratospheric boundary by four miles.
